The alkoxycarbonylation of phenylacetylene into various cinnamate esters was achieved regioselectively using a simple catalyst system formed from palladium (II), 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (dppb) and salicylborate complex in acetonitrile as a solvent. Excellent selectivities (90-96%) in cinnamate esters were obtained.

Atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition of WO3 thin films from a volatile fluorinated tungsten oxo-alkoxide precursor, W(O)(OCH2CF3)4 (p 560-564)
K. C. Molloy, P. A. Williams
Published Online: Aug 11 2008 4:17AM
DOI: 10.1002/aoc.1439

The monomeric tungsten oxo-fluoroalkoxide W(O)(CH2CF3)4 (1) was synthesized from W(O)Cl4 and CF3CH2OH in the presence of ammonia. It was used in atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition experiments to deposit non-stoichiometric WO2.9 when used as a single-source precursor or stoichiometric WO3 when O2 was used as co-reagent.

Synthesis and structure of a µ-oxo diiron(III) complex with an N-pyridylmethyl-N,N-bis(4-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)amine ligand and its catalytic property for hydrocarbon oxidation (p 573-576)

The µ-oxo diiron complex [{Fe(pbba)Cl}2(µ-O)]Cl2 (1, pbba = N-pyridylmethyl-N,N-bis(4-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)amine) was synth- esized as a close structural model of MMO. Each iron core in 1 is located in benzoimidazoyl and pyridyl coordination sphere by mimicing the function of histidine motifs in natural enzyme. The catalytic properties of 1 were tested in the selective oxidation of hydrocarbon using different peroxide oxidants, which illustrated a radical-based oxidation mechanism.

Novel pyridine-bis(ferrocene-isoxazole) ligand: synthesis and application to palladium-catalyzed Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions under copper- and phosphine-free conditions (p 577-582)
Zhijun Feng, Shuyan Yu, Yongjia Shang
Published Online: Aug 12 2008 9:07AM
DOI: 10.1002/aoc.1445

The first synthesis and application to the Sonogashira reaction of pyridine-bis(ferrocene-isoxazole) Pd(II) complex 5 are described. Under copper- and phosphine-free conditions, the stable complex 5 efficiently catalyzed the cross-coupling of aryl halides with terminal alkynes in DMF-H2O with TBAB as an additive, hexahydropyridine as base and affording internal arylated alkynes in moderate to excellent yields.

A series of bimetallic chiral [Co(salen)]-type complexes were successfully applied for the synthesis of optically pure -blockers via phenolicinetic resolution of racemic epichlorohydrin [2-(chloromethyl)oxirane; ( ± )ECH]. The reaction proceeded readily at room temperature and consequently provided enantiomerically enriched corresponding -aryloxy alcohols with excellent enantioselectivities of up to 98% ee. The phenolicinetic resolution method described in this work is a highly efficient and straightforward strategy for the synthesis of chiral building blocks.

Chiral pyrrolidine SalenMn(III) complexes with an anchored functional group such as imidazole or quaternary ammonium salt at the Naza-substituent in the pyrrolidine backbone were synthesized, and used as catalyst for asymmetric epoxidation of substituted chromenes, with comparable enantioselectivity and higher activities relative to Jacobsen catalyst using NaClO as the oxidant.
